Example of the One Who Forbids Munkar And Who Doesn't Forbid Evil (On Seeing It)

Date: 9th Rabi Al Aakhir 1445 / 24.10.23 | Hadees Number: 69

1. This Hadees is recorded in Sahih al Bukhari, Tirmidhi, Baihaqi and Ahmad.

2. Al-Nu’man Ibn Bashir (رضي الله عنه) Reported:

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “The parable of those who respect the limits of Allah and those who violate them is that of people who board a ship after casting lots, some of them residing in its upper deck and others in its lower deck. When those in the lower deck want water, they pass by the upper deck and say: If we tear a hole in the bottom of the ship, we will not harm those above us. If those in the upper deck let them do what they want, they will all be destroyed together. If they restrain them, they will all be saved together.” (Sahih Al- Bukhari)

3. Shaykh As Saylani (حفظه الله):

The meaning of the hadeeth is if we see a person doing an act of munkar and we do not forbid him by guiding, then we will all sink in it. This will affect the whole society. So those who have knowledge and authority must guide and advise about evil of the munkar (Forbidden acts). Being on the right path but not forbidding the evil around us will get everything destroyed by it. This is like a person making a hole in ship which may sink all of them if that person was not stopped.

4. Other narrations with different wordings and weak narration with similar meaning were discussed.

Imam Al-Albani (حفظه الله):

As a summary from this hadith, we see Three categories of people.

First: one who establishes the boundaries set by shariah and follows it strictly, forbids evil and encourages good.

Second: One who does good deeds and bad deeds, showing negligence in guarding the boundaries of Allah (سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ)

Third: The one who is completely negligent about forbidding evil and encouraging good.

6. Shaykh As Saylani (حفظه الله):

Everyone has to forbid evil and encourage good according to his knowledge & capability.

7. Shaykh As Saylani (حفظه الله) concluded by saying:

If our efforts are not fruitful and people continue to do bad deeds even after advising does not mean that we have fulfilled our duty and we are not answerable to Allah about it. Remember that shaytaan is constantly working. We must encourage people towards goodness, support them all to strengthen their emaan and to forbid evil in the society.

Therefore, Leaving of the act of forbidding evil will destroy all of us who are a part of the community, according to this hadeeth.
