Standing in Respect to Welcome a Person

٦٧ - (قُومُوا إِلى سَيِّدِكُم فَأَنْزِلُوهُ، فَقالَ عُمَرُ: سَيِّدُنَا اللهُ عزَّ وجَلَّ . قالَ : أَنْزِلُوهُ . فَأَنْزَلُوهُ)

Meaning of Hadeeth:

Go to your master (Sa'ad ibn Muaadh) and bring (carry) him down (from the donkey). Umar may Allah be pleased him said: Our master is Allah Azzawajal . He said: Bring him down. So they brought (Sa'ad ibn Muaadh) him down.

1. This hadeeth is recorded in Musannaf ibn Abi Shaybah, Ibn hibban and other books. And similar hadeeth can be found in Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawud, Ahmad and other books.

2. It talks about the battle that took place in Banu Quraidah and rulings related to taking prisoners etc. But, our heading here from this narration is about the ruling on standing for a person for welcoming. The correct opinion in this matter is that it is not allowed to do so.

3. Imam Al-Albani rahimahullah discussed two main benefits under this topic. Firstly, this narration is famously known with the wording 'لسيدكم' for your chief (or the best among you)

However in the two narrations it is narrated with the words,"إلى سيدكم” to your chief(to help him). But the Shaykh did not find any basis for the words لسيدكم. Because of this, there is a fiqh mistake taking place.

For example, this narration is recorded under the title 'standing to welcome someone' by imam battah in sharh Sahih al buhari. Wordings of this narration is misunderstood because of the mistake in writing(recording it). This can be found in the book written by Hafidh Muhammad bin Nasir Abul Fadl regarding list of words in the narrations that are changed and misunderstood for various reasons. Meaning of the word السيد has to be understood correctly. The correct meaning of the word is 'best among you'.

Secondly, because of this misunderstanding, standing for someone to welcome is considered permissible using this hadeeth as proof. If we study the whole story or the events in this long narration, we can find that this understanding is not present. Since Saad ibn Muaadh May Allah be pleased with him was sick the Prophet ordered the people to go and carry him down “فَأَنْزَلُوهُ” (from the donkey).

This is the correct understanding and it was explained by Imam ibn Hajar and Imam An-Nawawi in kitab al qiyam.

4. Ash Shaykh As-Saylani (حفظه الله) concluded by saying many scholars including Shaykh Bin Baz used the mistaken wordings لسيدكم in this hadeeth. And using this, a fatwa for the persmissibility for standing to welcome someone was given. But it is a mistake. May Allah have mercy on all the scholars of sunnah.
